Focus on Fire Safety: Electrical Fire Safety

An estimated 28,300 residential building electrical fires occur annually and cause 360 civilian deaths, 1,000 civilian injuries, and $995 million in direct loss according to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA).

Electrical fires occur most often during the months of December and January. Most electrical fires result from problems with faulty electrical outlets and old wiring. Problems with cords and plugs, such as extension and appliance cords, also cause many home electrical fires.

To prevent an electrical fire in your home, routinely check electrical appliances and wiring and replace all worn, old, or damaged cords immediately.

I am requesting any information from other departments that have a Fire Department Citizens Advisory Committee. I am considering developing one but have very little knowledge on this subject.

We are an all career suburban fire department serving a predominately all African American Community. I am looking for any and all information on how to go about forming a Citizen Advisory Committee and what their role should be within the fire department structure. Any successes, failures, advice etc.?

Thank You all in advance for your help. Be Safe!!!

Two requests:

1) I am looking for short audio files of radio traffic between dispatch and companies that illustrates benchmark practices and poor practices. We are attempting to develop a training program for a 13 agency regional dispatch with nearly 500 career firefighters. We would prefer to use radio traffic from departments outside our area so as not to embarrass members and keep the focus on the need.

2) I am looking for stand pipe operations SOPs and JPRs that deal with 2-inch and 2&1/2-inch hose.

If you have large files (greater than 6MB) I have a file transfer service than can be used to send them to me. Thanks for your assistance.

We would like to report "dollars saved" rather than just "dollars lost" due to fire. For example, in a building valued at $100 that experienced a fire, we currently would only report that there was a fire that caused $5 in damage. We would like to report something similar to "the building was valued at $100, the fire department saved $95, and the fire caused $5 in damage." Does anybody make use of this type of reporting? If so, would you please share your policy and/or practice with me?

Thank you in advance!

I am looking for some similar information as requested by George Thomas IV last week regarding driving accidents, but with the focus on volunteer departments. I am looking for information on shift staffing schedules in other than 24 hour blocks (i.e.: 12, 10/14, 8). If you work such a schedule I would appreciate a copy of your schedule rotation, the number of apparatus and minimum staffing per vehicle and per shift.

Lessons Learned

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LLIS.gov has partnered with the Emergency Management and Response – Information Sharing and Analysis Center (EMR-ISAC) to provide LLIS.gov members access to the EMR-ISAC’s free, critical infrastructure protection (CIP) information. Located at the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, MD, the EMR-ISAC was developed to collect, analyze, and disseminate timely, consequential information to assist in the practice of critical infrastructure protection by the leaders, owners, and operators of the nation’s Emergency Services Sector.

The EMR-ISAC, a no-cost information sharing program within the Department of Homeland Security, specifically provides information necessary to protect local internal critical infrastructures (i.e., personnel, physical assets, and communication/cyber systems that must be intact and operational 24 x 7) against all hazards, from natural disasters to terrorist activities. The program’s main focus is ensuring that emergency response leadership, their organizations, and local policy leaders have both the internal and external support and resources to aid in disaster protection, prevention, and response to enhance survivability, continuity of operations, and mission success.

The EMR-ISAC can be contacted at emr-isac@dhs.gov or 301-447-1325. To view the EMR-ISAC page on LLIS.gov, please click here or login to LLIS.gov and click on the EMR-ISAC link on the homepage.
