ASBURY PARK, N.J. -- A fire broke out Thursday in a 15-story apartment building, injuring seven people and temporarily trapping several others on balconies, the city's fire department said.

All seven who were injured, including one critically, suffered smoke inhalation.

The blaze, the cause of which is not known, began around 11:20 a.m. in a cluttered 14th story apartment of the Monroe Towers. The fire forced those living in the top three floors to flee, said Garrett Giberson, an Asbury Park fire inspector.

The apartment's occupant, Sunovia Williams, 80, was pulled out by firefighters who had to crawl over an array of debris that contributed to the intensity of the blaze and hampered efforts to reach her and her husband, Giberson said.

A juvenile, whose age was not immediately available, and five firefighters also suffered smoke inhalation.

The building is one of the tallest buildings in Asbury Park, a community along the Atlantic Ocean. The blaze was initially too high for ladder trucks, forcing firefighters to fight the flames from inside, Asbury Park fire Capt. Frank Dilello said. He wasn't sure if the building had sprinklers, but said there were hose hookups inside.

Santa Claus he's not, but it didn't stop Alejandro Valencio from trying to surprise the woman he called his girlfriend.

Valencio, according to the Evansville Courier & Press, got wedged inside the chimney of a home being rented by Connie Deweese at 3:30 a.m.

"I've dated a lot of psychos in my life, but nobody like that," Deweese told the newspaper.

Firefighters requested assistance from the police because they said Deweese was blocking the fireplace, wanting to protect the bricks.

"I told them to leave him in the chimney and let him die," she told the Courier & Press.

After the rescue, she said she went back to bed and later awoke to find the man back at the home.

"I beat his (butt) and told him to get out," she told the paper.

She forced him out the front door, screaming and throwing beer bottles at him.

LANSING, Mich. - Firefighters cut a hole in the side of a house and used a forklift to extricate a 900-pound man from his second-floor bedroom after a visiting nurse became worried about his health.

Rescue workers were called in Tuesday by the nurse, who determined the 33-year-old man needed medical help, Fire Chief Tom Cochran said.

Cochran said the man had not left his home since 2003.

The man’s brother, who lives with him, said he suffers from Prader-Willi Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that creates a chronic feeling of hunger that can lead to overeating and life-threatening obesity.

Rescue workers brought in a forklift, high enough to raise a platform to a hole cut into the wall of the house. They covered the man with a blue tarp to shield him from onlookers and slid the platform onto a flatbed truck for a trip to Sparrow Hospital.

The search for six miners missing deep underground in the US was abruptly halted after a second cave-in killed three rescue workers and injured at least six others trying to tunnel through rubble to reach them.

Huntington Mayor Hilary Gordon said: “It just feels like a really hard blow to swallow after all we’ve been through the last week and a half and everyone trying to hope in their own individual way.

The setback yesterday came on the 11th day of the effort to find six miners who have been confined at least 1,500 feet below ground at the Crandall Canyon mine in Utah state. It was unknown if the six were alive.

All rescue workers were evacuated from the mine and work underground was stopped...

“The seismic activity underground has just been relentless. The mountain is still alive, the mountain is still moving and we cannot endanger the rescue workers as we drive toward these trapped miners,” said Bob Murray, chief of Murray Energy Corp., the co-owner and operator of the Crandall Canyon mine.

Mining rescues after 10 or more days aren't unheard of. Two miners were rescued in May 2006 after being trapped for 14 days following a collapse at an Australian mine. In 1968, six miners were rescued after 10 days in West Virginia. But the Aug. 6 cave-in released low-oxygen air into the working area of the mine. Downward pressure on the walls sent chunks of coal flying like bullets through the shaft.

A five-year-old boy has died after his neck became trapped in an electric window of his family's car.

Michael Dury is thought to have been playing with his brother when the accident happened outside the family home in New Addington, south London.

Ambulance crews tried to resuscitate Michael but he died at St George's Hospital in Tooting on Wednesday.

His parents, Wendy and Paul Dury, paid tribute to the "very lovable child" who always "brought a smile to everyone".

A police spokesman said: "The incident is being treated as a sudden death. Police are providing support for the family and will prepare a report for the coroner in due course."

SAN PABLO, Calif.—An early-morning house fire Saturday killed four people, including two firefighters trapped by surging flames while trying to rescue one of the home's residents, authorities said.
Fire Captain Matt C. Burton, 34, of Concord and Fire Engineer Scott P. Desmond, 37, of Brentwood died in the blaze that broke out around 1:45 a.m., said Emily Hopkins, spokeswoman for the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.

A 67-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman who lived in the San Pablo house also died in the blaze. Their names were not yet released.

One of the residents had already been found when the firefighters plunged back into the burning building to find the other person.

Firefighters on the scene then "heard kind of a whoosh sound, and the fire started going through the rooms," Contra Costa Fire Chief Keith Richter said. "That trapped the firefighters."

The men were wearing standard safety equipment when they were caught in a "flashover" in which hot gasses trapped in a burning structure ignite in a sudden burst of flame, Richter said.

The fire at the Humane Society was a new kind of battle for firefighters.

"No fire alarms came in or anything, it was a passerby that saw it," said Lt. Michael Biladeau of Fire Station 28. "The whole roof was engulfed, so it lit up every room."

When they tried to get inside, they were faced with a challenge they hardly ever have to deal with.

"The place was like on lockdown. I mean every door was locked, we had to force all the doors," said Lt. Biladeau.

It quickly became exhausting. "It took extra effort to get into every door, so after about two or three doors, you're just really tired."

Once past the locked doors, firefighters found locked kennel after locked kennel.

"We'd be in a room and you'd have an engine guy spraying water, you'd have a ladder guy pulling ceiling, and at the same time another guy would be in there opening kennels, shooing dogs out."

A 50-year-old man fell through the ice at Donner Lake near Truckee, Calif., in February and drowned. Police said he was ice-skating about 100 yards off shore while wearing 2-foot-tall stilts (thus, the stilts were wearing the skates), and couldn't recover after falling through. California Highway Patrol officers at the scene near Yuba City, Nev., said the 28-year-old driver that crossed into oncoming traffic and fatally crashed into a Hummer in February was, perhaps, working at his laptop computer while driving. A 15-year-old boy in Hamilton, Ontario, was finally rescued after dangling from a rope, nearly naked, upside down, in the minus-5-degree (F) cold, after a February attempt to spray graffiti on a new bridge went bad. He got his inspiration while tobogganing alone, at about 8 p.m., and left his gloves and cell phone in the sled as he rappelled over the side of the bridge, but when the rope slipped and entangled him, he found himself upside down and then lost some clothes as he tried to wriggle free.
