Furniture Store Safety Inspections to Honor Fallen Charleston Firefighters
This is a request and EXCELLENT IDEA from the Monroe County (NY) Fire Marshals and Inspectors Association to Firefighters across the world...and it is our honor to help get this accomplished.
On June 18, the City of Charleston, South Carolina along with the Firefighters all of the United States, Canada and the World, will observe the 2 year Anniversary of the Super Sofa fire that took the lives of 9 Charleston firefighters. As you well know, these Firefighters died in the Line of Duty while battling a fast moving fire in a furniture store. http://www.postandcourier.com/news/firefighters/
How Can You Help?
Inspect - Between June 9 and June 18th we ask all local municipalities to conduct a fire safety inspection of all furniture stores in their jurisdictions.
Pre-Plan - Between now and June 18th we ask all fire departments to update or complete a pre-plan on all the furniture stores in their first due areas. Share the pre-plan with neighboring departments, companies or stations that would respond on a fire with you.
Get Out and Examine, Inspect, Inquire and Report your findings.
When You Finish - Complete the web survey located at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=kOOGDvMDPpn0IaadXaiwDQ_3d_3d
Answering the few short questions will allow us to compile a final action report. The report will show the number of inspections completed, violations issued and pre-plans completed.
WHY? To honor our fallen Firefighters and to prevent a similar tragedy from occurring. What better way can we show the families of the fallen firefighters their ultimate sacrifice has not been forgotten.
NOTE: This idea was born following a presentation on the Charleston Fire at the National Fire Academy during the recent PARADE (Prevention Advocacy Resource and Data Exchange) Conference. Questions can be directed to William Timmons, President of the Monroe County Fire Marshals and Inspectors Association (MCFMIA) president@mcfmia.org MCFMIA located in Rochester, New York is a good group of Fire Marshals, Inspectors, Fire Service and industry members interested in fire prevention and education for the fire service and code enforcement community.
The United States Fire Administration recommends everyone should have a comprehensive fire protection plan that includes smoke alarms, residential sprinklers, and practicing a home fire escape plan.
