Notice of Firefighter Fatality - Springville, UT

The United States Fire Administration (USFA) has received notice of the following firefighter fatality:

Incident Description:  After having made an emergency run on his shift the night before, Chief Whitney called the fire department early in the morning of October 28, 2009, to say he was not feeling well.  Chief Whitney was found dead in his Springville home later that morning.  The cause of death is pending further examination.

Funeral Arrangements:  A public viewing will be held on Sunday, November 1, 2009, from 1800hrs to 2000hrs at the Springville Fire Department at 75 W. Center Street, Springville, Utah.  Funeral services will be Monday, November 2, 2009 at 1100hrs at the Spring Creek North Stake Center at 760 N. 400 E. in Springville, Utah.

Memorial Fund Contact and Address:  The family requests that donations be made to the Springville Fire Department Statue Fund in memory of Chief Whitney, 75 W. Center Street, Springville, Utah 84663.

The Nation's news media is reporting the following residential fire (non-arson) fatalities:

  • 1 dead – Occurred Wednesday, 10/28 – Pearl River, LA (New Orleans, LA):  A 30-year-old man was killed in a mobile home fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

To find out more about any of the reported incidents, please contact news media in the vicinity where the fatal fire occurred. USFA does not have any additional information other than what is listed here.

My name is Troy Perry, I am a Captain with Walker County Emergency Services. I am in the process of writing a Department Safety Officer SOG.

As not to reinvent the wheel, I am looking for SOG's or SOP's that are currently being used. Primarily the HSO portion as the ISO portion is currently in place.  However, any information would be greatly appreciated. Located below is some of the criteria in which I have been charged to meet:

 

1. Comply With NFPA 1521.

2. Include Both HSO and ISO.

3. Response procedures.

4. Injury investigation procedures.

My Department recently placed in service a 100' midmount Sutphen Tower, this truck has taken the place of a 105' rear mount straight stick aerial. Because of the obvious difference I am looking for the best training materials, SOPs, articles etc. on spotting and use of a mid-mount tower.

 

If anyone has information on this it would truly be appreciated.

My Fire District is currently looking into painting the top section of our ground ladders beams with paint and applying DOT reflective tape to aid in ladder location for companies working on roofs.  I would greatly appreciate any information as to who may have implemented it?  What color has worked best?  Type of paint and durability?  Maintenance issue you may have encountered?  Any other thought you may have. Does anyone have SOP’s they would be willing to share regarding the release of EMS reports to the public?  We are a non-transport Fire agency which runs EMS calls and does not bill for these services.  Any information would be great as we modify our policies.

LLIS.gov has partnered with the Emergency Management and Response – Information Sharing and Analysis Center (EMR-ISAC) to provide LLIS.gov members access to the EMR-ISAC’s free, critical infrastructure protection (CIP) information. Located at the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, MD, the EMR-ISAC was developed to collect, analyze, and disseminate timely, consequential information to assist in the practice of critical infrastructure protection by the leaders, owners, and operators of the nation’s Emergency Services Sector.

The EMR-ISAC, a no-cost information sharing program within the Department of Homeland Security, specifically provides information necessary to protect local internal critical infrastructures (i.e., personnel, physical assets, and communication/cyber systems that must be intact and operational 24 x 7) against all hazards, from natural disasters to terrorist activities.
