The United States Fire Administration (USFA) has received notice of the following firefighter fatality:

Name: Carl Nordwall

Fire Department: Norfolk Airport Fire Department

Fire Department Chief: Charles Lavene

Incident Description: While he and his crew were participating in shift change and roll call, Captain Nordwall complained of not feeling well and collapsed. Medical assistance (CPR/AED) was rendered immediately by fellow firefighters and Nordwall was transported to the hospital. Despite all efforts of medical personnel, Captain Nordwall succumbed to his injury several days later.

Funeral Arrangements: The funeral will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at 1400 hours at the Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, VA - (757) 340-1717.

The United States Fire Administration recommends everyone should have a comprehensive fire protection plan that includes smoke alarms, residential sprinklers, and practicing a home fire escape plan.
