The Nation's news media is reporting the following residential fire (non-arson) fatalities:

Monday, January 11

  • 3 dead – Occurred Monday, 1/11 – Meridian, MS:  Three people were killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation. 
  • 3 dead – Occurred Sunday, 1/10 – Opelousas, LA (Lafayette, LA):  A 23-year-old woman, her three-year-old son and two-year-old daughter were killed in a home fire. The home had no smoke alarms. The cause of the fire is under investigation. 
  • 2 dead – Occurred Sunday, 1/10 – Mobile, AL:  A 68-year-old man and his son, believed to be in his 40s, were killed in a manufactured home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation. 
  • 2 dead – Occurred Sunday, 1/10 – Palo, MI (Grand Rapids, MI):  Two men, both in their 50s, were killed in a group home fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation. 
  • 2 dead – Occurred Sunday, 1/10 – Jasper, IN (Evansville, IN):  Two elderly people were killed in a home fire.  The cause of the fire was careless smoking. 
  • 2 dead – Occurred Saturday, 1/9 – Elizabethton, TN (Tri-Cities, TN):  Two people were killed in a manufactured home fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation. 
  • 1 dead – Occurred Monday, 1/11 – Edmonds, WA (Tacoma, WA):  A woman in her 70s was killed in a home fire.  The home had no smoke alarms. The cause of the fire was careless smoking. 
  • 1 dead – Occurred Sunday, 1/10 – Sweeny, TX (Houston, TX):  A four-year-old boy was killed in a home fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation. 
  • 1 dead – Occurred Sunday, 1/10 – Little Rock, AR:  A 51-year-old man was killed in a home fire.  Fire officials believe the fire was caused by careless smoking. 
  • 1 dead – Occurred Sunday, 1/10 – Washington, MO  (St. Louis, MO):  A 61-year-old man was killed in a home fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation. 
  • 1 dead – Occurred Saturday, 1/9 – Fruitvale, CO (Grand Junction - Montrose, CO):  A 45-year-old man was killed in a home fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation. 
  • 1 dead – Occurred Saturday, 1/9 – Woodland, NC  (Raleigh - Durham, NC):  A 75-year-old woman was killed in a manufactured home fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation. 
  • 1 dead – Occurred Saturday, 1/9 – Denham Springs, LA (Baton Rouge, LA):  A man was killed in a home fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation. 
  • 1 dead – Occurred Saturday, 1/9 – Kansas City, KS (Kansas City, MO):  An 81-year-old man was killed in a home fire. Fire officials believe space heaters caused the fire.
  • 1 dead – Occurred Friday, 1/8 – Midway, GA (Savannah, GA):  A two-month-old boy was killed in a home fire.  The fire was caused by a wood-burning stove. 
  • 1 dead – Occurred Friday, 1/8 – Caddo, LA (Shreveport, LA):  An elderly man, believed to be homeless, was killed in a vacant manufactured home fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation. 
  • 1 dead – Occurred Friday, 1/8 – Shreveport, LA:  A man was killed in a home fire.  The fire was caused by a propane cooking burner being used for heat. 
  • 1 dead – Occurred Friday, 1/8 – Kearney, NE (Lincoln, NE):  An 81-year-old man was killed in a home fire.  Fire officials believe the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction in a heating pad, placed on an upholstered chair.

The United States Fire Administration recommends everyone should have a comprehensive fire protection plan that includes smoke alarms, residential sprinklers, and practicing a home fire escape plan.
