IN THIS ISSUE:

Secretary Chertoff appoints new members to the National Fire Academy Board of Visitors

On January 14, 2009, Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff appointed two new members of the National Fire Academy Board of Visitors, Randy Novak and Adam Thiel.  Director Novak is the long-time director of the Iowa State Fire Training Academy and an officer in the North American Fire Training Directors Association.  Chief Thiel is the Chief of Department in Alexandria, Virginia, the former Deputy Chief of Goodyear, Arizona and the former State Fire Training Director in Virginia.  Both bring a wealth of experience in training and education, along with remarkable accomplishments in the fire and emergency services.

According to the BOV Charter, the appointments of long-time BOV members Dr. Robert Fleming and Chief Don Oliver have termed-out on September 30, 2008.  Under the Charter, they were ineligible for re-appointment but both graciously agreed to remain on the Board during holdover status, until their replacements were appointed.  Both Dr. Fleming and Chief Oliver were passionate, articulate and influential members of the BOV; no task was too difficult, no challenge too daunting, no effort too complex.  Their legacy will always be the visionary course of action that they set for the Academy.   Saying good-bye to both of them has been one of the more difficult things I’ve had to do, but fortunately for all of us, they both offered to continue to assist the NFA in any way they can.

I ask each of you to join me in thanking Dr. Fleming and Chief Oliver for their leadership over the years, and to welcome our new Board Members, Director Randy Novak and Chief Adam Thiel.

Dr. Denis Onieal

Superintendent

National Fire Academy

There seems to be some confusion regarding the grammar in a sentence in today's Coffee Break Training:

A sentence within the body of the text states: "There is no question that the doors could be confused with the adjacent wall finishes," while the photo caption reads ""The pattern on these doors provides a clear contrast to the adjacent wall."

People are asking if that is a conflict, and suggesting the sentence should read"There is no question that the doors would NOT be confused with the adjacent wall finishes."  That phrasing, though, is a double negative that is grammatically incorrect.

Rather than "There is no question that the doors could be confused with the adjacent wall finishes,"  perhaps it would be better understoon if if read "There is no question that the doors would be confused with the adjacent wall finishes."

Thaks for your attention to detail.

Rob

GREASE FILTERS FOR EXHAUST DUCTS

Commercial kitchens that use fryers and other grease-producing devices must have a means of ventilating the flammable vapors to the outdoors. The exhaust ducts must have filters to trap the larger particulate before it accumulates in the duct.

Today's Coffee Break Training, "Grease Filters for Exhaust Ducts," describes the requirements for grease filtering devices.

Your Coffee Break can be downloaded from http://www.usfa.dhs.gov/downloads/pdf/coffee-break/cb_fp_2009_3.pdf

HISTORY OF AUTOMATIC SPRINKLERS

Automatic sprinklers have a more than century-old record of effective fire control.  Go to http://www.nfaonline.dhs.gov/browse/index.shtm#P136 to learn about the early days and development of sprinklers, and the many innovations that have evolved to make sprinklers the best life-safety and fire protection tool we have today.
