Incident Description: Firefighter Sandy was working water supply and pumper operations at the scene of a residential structure fire when he collapsed from an apparent heart attack moments after refueling one of the motors. Firefighters and other responders worked to resuscitate Firefighter Sandy, but he succumbed to his injury.

2 dead – Occurred Tuesday, 1/26 – Springfield, VA (Washington, DC): Two men were killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
2 dead – Occurred Monday, 1/25 – Sandy, UT (Salt Lake City, UT): A 90-year-old woman and her 54-year-old disabled daughter were killed in a home fire. A discarded cigarette left smoldering in a chair caused the fire.
2 dead – Occurred Monday, 1/25 – Thornhurst, PA (Wilkes Barre – Scranton, PA): An 87-year-old woman and her 46-year-old son were killed in a home fire. The woman was confined to a wheelchair. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
1 dead – Occurred Tuesday, 1/26 – Jackson County, NC (Raleigh – Durham, NC): A man in his mid-50s was killed in an apartment fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
1 dead – Occurred Tuesday, 1/26 – Lafayette, LA: A 54-year-old disabled man was killed in a manufactured home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
1 dead – Occurred Tuesday, 1/26 – Leesburg, FL (Orlando – Daytona Beach, FL): A person was killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
1 dead – Occurred Monday, 1/25 – Bayfield, CO (Albuquerque, NM): A toddler was killed in a manufactured home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
1 dead – Occurred Monday, 1/25 – Fresno, CA: An 86-year-old woman was killed in an apartment fire. Officials believe the fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.
1 dead – Occurred Monday, 1/25 – Eau Claire, WI (La Crosse – Eau Claire, WI): A 73-year-old man was killed in an apartment fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
1 dead – Occurred Monday, 1/25 – Norwalk, OH (Cleveland, OH): A 66-year-old man succumbed from injuries sustained in a home fire that occurred Thursday, 1/14. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
1 dead – Occurred Monday, 1/25 – Crete, NE (Lincoln, NE): A 50-year-old man was killed in a home fire. Official believe the fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.
1 dead – Occurred Sunday, 1/24 – Collins, MS (Hattiesburg – Laurel, MS): A 60-year-old man was killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
1 dead – Occurred Saturday, 1/23: A 53-year-old woman was killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Monday, January 25: Correction

5 dead – Occurred Saturday, 1/23 – Nashville, TN: A 50-year-old man, his 32-year-old wife; their daughters, eight and four-years-old; and a family friend, a 24-year-old man. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

2 dead – Occurred Sunday, 1/24 – Hartsgrove Township, OH (Cleveland, OH): A 46-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman were killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
2 dead – Occurred Friday, 1/22 – Martin, TN (Paducah, KY – Cape Girardeau, MO – Harrisburg, IL): A 41-year-old man and an infant boy were killed in a manufactured home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
1 dead – Occurred Monday, 1/25 – Marion, SC (Florence – Myrtle Beach, SC): A 62-year-old man was killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
1 dead – Occurred Sunday, 1/24 – South Chicago, IL (Chicago, IL): A 69-year-old man was killed in a home fire. Officials believe a space heater may have been too close to flammables, which caused the fire.
1 dead – Occurred Sunday, 1/24 – Edgewater, MD (Baltimore, MD): A person was killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
1 dead – Occurred Sunday, 1/24 – Templeton, CA (Santa Barbara, CA): A person was killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

4 dead – Occurred Wednesday, 1/20 – Baltimore, MD: A 65-year-old woman, her 24- and 14-year-old granddaughters, and her two-year-old great-granddaughter were killed in a home fire. There were no signs of smoke alarms in the home. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
1 dead – Occurred Thursday, 1/21 – Radium Springs, GA (Albany, GA): A 74-year-old woman was killed in a home fire. The fire was caused by careless smoking.
1 dead – Occurred Thursday, 1/21 – St. Charles, MO (St. Louis, MO): A woman was killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
1 dead – Occurred Wednesday, 1/20 – Crestline, CA (Los Angeles, CA): A 50-year-old man was killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
1 dead – Occurred Wednesday, 1/20 – Springfield, IL (Springfield - Decatur, IL): An 84-year-old woman succumbed to injuries sustained in a home fire that occurred on 1/16. The fire was caused by careless smoking.
1 dead – Occurred Monday, 1/18 – Ulysses, NE (Omaha, NE): A 49-year-old man was killed in a home fire. The charred home was discovered on 1/18, but officials aren’t sure if the fire occurred on Sunday or Monday. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
1 dead – Occurred Monday, 1/11 – Gloucester, VA (Norfolk, VA): A 67-year-old woman succumbed to injuries sustained in a home fire that occurred on 12/30. The cause of the fire was ruled as undetermined.

This site is designed for the students in my Fire Tech classes at Santa Ana College, and anyone else that might find it interesting.

I use this site to post things related to the courses I teach. Certainly all things fire prevention-- both funny and serious--and anything else that I find compelling (or inane).

Content decisions are guided by the following principles:
1. All learning is physiological.
2. The Brain-Mind is social.
3. The search for meaning is innate.
4. The search for meaning occurs through patterning.
5. Emotions are critical to patterning.
6. The Brain-Mind processes parts and wholes simultaneously.
7. Learning involves both focused attention and peripheral perception.
8. Learning always involves conscious and unconscious processes.
9. There are at least two approaches to memory: archiving individual facts or skills or making sense of experience.
10. Learning is developmental.
11. Complex learning is enhanced by challenge and inhibited by threat associated with helplessness.
12. Each brain is uniquely organized
