The Nation's news media is reporting the following residential fire (non-arson) fatalities:
- 3 dead – Occurred Wednesday, 1/21 – Waymart, PA (Scranton, PA): A 28-year-old woman, an 11-year-old boy, and a six-year-old boy were killed in an apartment fire. The cause of the fire was a pot left cooking on the stove.
- 2 dead – Occurred Thursday, 1/22 – Columbus, GA (Columbus, GA): Two children were killed in an apartment fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
- 2 dead – Occurred Friday, 1/16 – Middlesboro, KY (Knoxville, TN): A 12-year-old boy and a six-year old boy were killed in a home fire. A burning cigarette caught a couch on fire.
- 1 dead – Occurred Thursday, 1/22 - Clay, WV (Huntington, WV): A 56-year-old woman was killed in a mobile home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
- 1 dead – Occurred Thursday, 1/22 – Auburn, WA (Tacoma, WA): A five-year-old girl was killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
- 1 dead – Occurred Wednesday, 1/21 – Little Rock, AR (Little Rock, AR): A 50-year-old man was killed in a home fire. Fire officials believe the victim was smoking in bed.
- 1 dead – Occurred Tuesday, 1/20 – Radersburg, MT (Butte, MT): A 90-year-old man was killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
- 1 dead – Occurred Monday, 1/19 – Glidden, IA (Des Moines, IA): A 16-year-old girl was killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire was a build-up of lint in the dryer. Officials say there were smoke alarms in the home but were unable to locate them in the debris.
- 1 dead – Occurred Saturday, 1/17 – North Richland Hills, TX (Fort Worth, TX): A 23-year-old man was killed in a home fire. Officials believe the fire may have been caused by someone smoking in bed.
- 1 dead – Occurred Thursday, 1/15 – Delcambre, LA (Lafayette, LA): A 69-year-old woman was killed in a home fire. A space heater placed too close to a couch caused the fire. There were no smoke alarms in the home.
To find out more about any of the reported incidents, please contact news media in the vicinity where the fatal fire occurred. USFA does not have any additional information other than what is listed here.
The United States Fire Administration recommends everyone should have a comprehensive fire protection plan that includes smoke alarms, residential sprinklers, and practicing a home fire escape plan.
