FIRE APPARATUS ACCESS ROAD WIDTHS

When was the last time you had trouble getting to an incident because of poor road conditions? The model fire codes provide the local code official tools to assure newly developed areas have adequate fire apparatus access.

Today’s Coffee Break Training, “Fire Apparatus Access Road Widths,” illustrates the potential problem of streets, roads and alleys that may be too narrow for safe and effective fire fighting operations.

Your Coffee Break can be downloaded from http://www.usfa.dhs.gov/downloads/pdf/coffee-break/cb_fp_2009_1.pdf

Always refer to nationally recognized design and installation standards, the product manufacturer or listing details for specific information.

Please share this Coffee Break Training segment and others with your peers. Previous Coffee Breaks may be found at http://www.usfa.dhs.gov/nfa/coffee-break/

SPRINKLER HYDRAULIC CALCULATIONS

Do you get intimidated by the mathematical formulas associated with fire sprinkler and standpipe hydraulic calculations?  The US National Fire Academy now has a new tool that can help you.

The Fire Academy has developed an online tutorial to explain how to use the Windows standard and scientific calculators to perform or verify the math used in hydraulic calculations.  You can find a link to the tutorial – plus a history of automatic sprinklers – at  http://www.usfa.dhs.gov/ax/staff/anderson/p136/ .
