A Coffee Break Training recipient asked today if it is a myth that polyurethane spray foam insulation is incompatible with CPVC sprinkler pipe.

This information is provided from one of the sprinkler pipe manufacturers' website:

http://www.harvelblazemaster.com/caution_areas/chemical_compatibility.asp

Polyurethane (Spray-On) Foams: The chemical compatibility of polyurethane foams with CPVC is currently under investigation by CPVC material suppliers. This process may take sometime to complete. Therefore at this time, we cannot say whether such products are compatible with CPVC. In addition to a potential chemical compatibility concern, it is known that when polyurethane foams are not properly applied there is the potential for excess heat that can lead to ballooning of the pipe and a subsequent failure. Exothermic reactions can occur during application of the foam that can generate excessive heat causing softening and failure of the CPVC pipe. It is recommended that the CPVC pipe be isolated from direct contact with spray foam insulation until more definitive information becomes available.

The United States Fire Administration recommends everyone should have a comprehensive fire protection plan that includes smoke alarms, residential sprinklers, and practicing a home fire escape plan.
