U.S. Fire Administration Civilian Fire Fatality Notification Update

The Nation's news media is reporting the following residential fire (non-arson) fatalities:

Monday, March 1

  • 3 dead – Occurred Saturday, 2/27 – Toms River, NJ (New York, NY ):  A 48-year-old man, his 42-year-old wife, and their six-year-old daughter were killed in a home fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • 2 dead – Occurred Monday, 3/1 – Newport News, VA (Norfolk, VA):  Two women, ages 24 and 22-years-old were killed in an apartment fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation. 
  • 2 dead – Occurred Sunday, 2/28 – Charlotte, NC:  Two children, ages one and two-years-old were killed in a home fire.  The fire was caused by a kerosene heater.
  • 2 dead – Occurred Friday, 2/28 – Candia, NH:  Two people were killed in a home fire.  The fire was caused by a propane heater placed too close to combustibles.  The home had a smoke alarm, but no batteries were found in the alarm.
  • 1 dead – Occurred Sunday, 2/28 – Scioto County,OH (Columbus, OH):  A toddler was killed in a manufactured home fire.  The fire was caused by a wood burning stove.  The home had smoke alarms, but officials did not hear them activate.
  • 1 dead – Occurred Sunday, 2/28 – Meredith, NH (Boston, MA):  A person was killed in a home fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • 1 dead – Occurred Sunday, 2/28 – La Crosse, WI:  A person was killed in an apartment fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation. 
  • 1 dead – Occurred Sunday, 2/28 – Buffalo, MO (Springfield, MO):  A man was killed in a home fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation. 
  • 1 dead – Occurred Sunday, 2/28 – West Terre Haute, IN (Terre Haute, IN):  An elderly woman was killed in a home fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • 1 dead – Occurred Saturday, 2/27 – Riverside, IL (Chicago, IL):  An 85-year-old woman was killed in a home fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.  The home had no working smoke alarms.  
  • 1 dead – Occurred Saturday, 2/27 – Dunkirk, NY (Buffalo, NY):  A 79-year-old woman was killed in a home fire.  The fire was caused by careless smoking.
  • 1 dead – Occurred Saturday, 2/27 – Lake Elsinore, CA (Palm Springs, CA):  A man was killed in a home fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation. 
  • 1 dead – Occurred Friday, 2/26 – Wayne Township, PA (Philadelphia, PA):  A 66-year-old man was killed in a home fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation. 
  • 1 dead – Occurred Friday, 2/26 – Kerrville, TX (San Antonio, TX):  A man was killed in a manufactured home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation. 
  • 1 dead – Occurred Friday, 2/26 – Westland, MI (Detroit, MI):  An 11-year-old boy was killed in an apartment fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation. 
  • 1 dead – Occurred Friday, 2/26 – Tuscumbia, AL (Huntsville, AL):   A 65-year-old man was killed in an apartment fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The United States Fire Administration recommends everyone should have a comprehensive fire protection plan that includes smoke alarms, residential sprinklers, and practicing a home fire escape plan.
