The Nation's news media is reporting the following residential fire (non-arson) fatalities:

Monday, 2/8 and Tuesday, 2/9

  • 5 dead - Occurred Saturday, 2/6 - Warwick, RI (Providence, RI New Bedford, MA):  A 24-year-old man, a 20-year-old woman, a 21-year-old woman, her 20-year-old fiancé and their seven-month-old daughter were killed in a home fire.  Officials found two smoke alarms (one in the basement and the other at the top of the stairs on the second floor) in the home, but they are uncertain if the smoke alarm on the second floor was operating. Officials believe the fire started in the ceiling between the first and second floors. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • 4 dead - Occurred Monday, 2/8 - St. Joseph, MO:  A 59-year-old woman, her 14-year-old granddaughter and two great-grandchildren believed to be a few months old were killed in a home fire. The fire was caused by a space heater.
  • 2 dead - Occurred Monday, 2/8 - Mulvane, KS (Wichita - Hutchinson, KS):  A four-year-old girl and her three-year-old sister were killed in a home fire. Officials believe the fire started in a bedroom closet which contained a furnace. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • 2 dead - Occurred Saturday, 2/6 - Portage County, OH (Toledo, OH):  A 63-year-old woman and her two-week-old grandson were killed in a manufactured home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • 2 dead - Occurred Friday, 2/5 - Arrowhead Farms, CA (Los Angeles):  A 77-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman were killed in a home fire. There were no working smoke alarms in the home. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • 1 dead - Occurred Tuesday, 2/9 - Greensboro, NC (Greensboro - Winston Salem, NC):  An 82-year-old woman was killed in an apartment fire. The apartment had working smoke alarms. The fire was caused by careless smoking.
  • 1 dead - Occurred Monday, 2/8 - Franklin, WI (Milwaukee, WI):  A man was killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • 1 dead - Occurred Monday, 2/8 - Laurel County, KY (Lexington, KY):  An 80-year-old woman was killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • 1 dead - Occurred Monday, 2/8 - Lancaster, SC (Charlotte, NC):  A woman was killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • 1 dead - Occurred Monday, 2/8 - Woodlawn, MD (Baltimore, MD):  A woman was killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • 1 dead - Occurred Sunday, 2/7 - Lansing, KS (Kansas City, MO):  A five-year-old girl was killed in a home fire. Officials believe the girl had been playing with a candle under a bed.
  • 1 dead - Occurred Sunday, 2/7 - Lufkin, TX  (Tyler - Longview, TX):  A 53-year-old man was killed in a home fire. Officials determined the fire was caused by a space heater that was too close to combustible objects.
  • 1 dead - Occurred Sunday, 2/7 - Methuen, MA (Boston, MA):  A 42-year-old man was killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • 1 dead - Occurred Sunday, 2/7 - Marina, CA (Salinas - Monterey, CA):  A 46-year-old man was killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • 1 dead - Occurred Saturday, 2/6 - Columbus, GA:  An 80-year-old man was killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • 1 dead - Occurred Saturday, 2/6 - St. Louis, MO:  A 10-year-old girl was killed in a home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • 1 dead - Occurred Saturday, 2/6 - Martinsville, VA (Roanoke - Lynchburg, VA):  A 57-year-old man was killed in an apartment fire. The fire was caused by careless smoking.
  • 1 dead - Occurred Saturday, 2/6 - Henrico County, VA (Raleigh - Durham, NC):  A 63-year-old woman succumbed to injuries sustained in a home fire on Friday, 2/5. The home had working smoke alarms. Officials believe the fire was caused by overloaded electrical wiring.
  • 1 dead - Occurred Saturday, 2/6 - Manchester, NJ (NYC):  A 90-year-old man succumbed to injuries sustained in an apartment fire on Friday, 2/5. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • 1 dead - Occurred Saturday, 2/6 - Hammond, LA (New Orleans, LA):  A 28-year-old man was killed in a manufactured home fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • 1 dead - Occurred Friday, 2/5 - Muskegon, MI (Grand Rapids):  An 86-year-old man was killed in a home fire. Officials believe the fire was caused by careless smoking.
  • 1 dead - Occurred Friday, 2/5 - Tremont, MS (Columbus, MS):  A 50-year-old man was killed in a home fire. The fire started in the kitchen. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • 1 dead - Occurred Friday, 2/5 - Ekalaka, MT (Rapid City, SD):  A 25-year-old man was killed in a home fire. Officials believe a wood fire caused the fire.

The United States Fire Administration recommends everyone should have a comprehensive fire protection plan that includes smoke alarms, residential sprinklers, and practicing a home fire escape plan.
