CLIFTON HEIGHTS — A 16-month-old baby boy rescued by firefighters from a burning row home early Friday in the borough later died of apparent smoke inhalation, police said.
Borough police initially arrived about 3:25 a.m. and observed heavy smoke and fire inside the home at 120 W. Berkley Ave., said police Chief Walter Senkow.
The father, identified as Thomas Pierce, and two older children were able to escape the blaze. The child’s mother was at work at the time, Senkow said.
Pierce and neighbors attempted to save the child, but were thwarted by heavy smoke. Firefighters gained entry and found the child in a crib in a second-floor bedroom, according to Senkow and borough fire Chief Jim Kneass.
